Community Profile:

Onion Lake Cree Nation is located 50 kilometers north of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan and is the only Cree Nation which straddles the Saskatchewan and Alberta borders. The community landmass of 21,254.6 hectares is divided in two sections: Makaoo and Sakaskohc with approximately 75% of the First Nation being located on the Saskatchewan side.

The population of our nation is more than 7506 members of which between 65 and 75 percent or 5200 of the members live on reserve. (2023 statistics). Onion Lake has a thriving economic base in the oil and gas industry. Onion Lake Group of Companies employ many of our band members today. An increase in population and prosperity brings with it adverse outcomes in social welfare to the community.

Onion Lake has five educational facilities, a modern Health Centre with two full time physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, diagnostic labs, and a private dental facility and a pharmacy. Furthermore, there are emergency services, ambulance, medical taxi, fire, and rescue. The group home for youth and children ages 6-14, a disability home and a baby group home. An outpatient drug and alcohol treatment Centre and detox has also been added to the list of services, including a transitional home offered in Onion Lake. For the youth in the community, there is an arena, outdoor waterparks, and a skate park for children. There are also two gas stations/convenient stores and a grocery store.

OLFS empowers and promotes the well-being of ni-wakohmakanak (all relatives) through prevention, intervention, education, and advocacy.

OLFS supports through culturally based, family centered programs and services for the safety of children and to assist parents and caregivers with skills obtained through our treaty and inherent right given to us by the Creator.

Pre-1995
Child Protection Services for OLCN

Child Protection services were delivered by the Ministry of Social Services (MSS), Lloydminster Office.

Funding Agreement

Saskatchewan Region Comprehensive Funding Agreement Indian Child & Family Services.

1994
OLFSI was Incorporated

The Onion Lake Family Services Inc. (OLFSI) was incorporated under the Provincial Non-Profit Organizations Act. Onion Lake Cree Nation Chief and Council and the MSS signed the First Nation Child & Family Services Agreement. The same parties also signed a Memorandum of Understanding. INAC signed a funding agreement to provide financial resources to OLFSI.

OLFSI Commenced Operation

OLFSI commenced operation to deliver child and family services to on reserve members.

Provincial Agreement with Saskatchewan

Provincial Agreement with OLFSI and Saskatchewan Family Services was signed.

Provincial Agreement with Alberta

Provincial Agreement with OLFSI and Alberta Family Services was signed.

OLFSI Moved

OLFSI moved to its current office.

OLFSI Temporarily Closed

OLFSI closed for approximately one year due to management issues. Child protection services continued to be provided by Agency staff.

OLFSI reopened and resumed services.

Vision & Mission Statements

OLFSI developed its Vision and Mission statements at a planning session involving the Board and staff.

New Prevention Agreement with INAC

OLFSI signed a new Prevention Agreement with INAC. Additional funding allowed OLFSI to hire new workers. The office building was expanded. A facility in Fowler Lake was erected for community activities and family camps.

5-Year Business and Operations Plans

OLFSI management and staff engaged in strategic planning in Lloydminster to produce its 5-year Business and Operations Plans.
