The Prevention Program initiated in 2009 through Canada’s Long-Term Reform on the Frist Nations Child and Family Services responded to providing fair and equitable funding to all First Nation Children across Canada. Today, the Onion Lake Prevention Program prioritizes proactive measures to prevent the need for reactive interventions, empathizing the utilization of family supports and ensuring care for all our children without prejudice. Onion Lake Family Services fosters working relationships with external agencies and participates in inter-agency groups to enhance collaboration and support. Additionally, the Prevention Program continues to work with the community to further its mission of safeguarding the well-being of children and families within the community.
To formally provide preventative services within the community a FNCFS Prevention Based Workplan was developed. The Prevention Based Workplan is a strategic plan that connects the Onion Lake Family Services Program and the community of Onion Lake to a common and focused path for achieving long-term goals together.
The objective of the Onion Lake Prevention Based Workplan is to:
Leading a variety of programs aimed at family and child development. Our program facilitators design and implement activities that promote healthy family dynamics and child development. These programs include workshops, support groups, and educational sessions tailored to meet the specific needs of our community.
Supporting parents through mentorship and practical assistance, including home visits and budgeting help. This program pairs experienced mentors with parents to provide guidance, support, and practical advice. Mentors help parents develop essential skills, manage their household budgets, and create a nurturing environment for their children.
Empowering parents with positive parenting techniques. Triple P provides parents with strategies to promote their children’s development and manage challenging behaviors. The program includes seminars, group sessions, and one-on-one consultations, helping parents build confidence and create a positive family environment.
Providing targeted support and activities for men and school-aged children. The Men’s Group offers a space for men to share experiences, receive support, and engage in activities that promote well-being and community involvement. School groups focus on the development and support of children, offering programs that address academic, social, and emotional needs.
Our Girl Power program is designed to inspire and empower school-aged girls to develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging. This engaging program provides a safe space for young girls to come together, make new friends, and learn valuable life skills that promote emotional and mental well-being. Through fun activities and group discussions, Girl Power helps participants build self-esteem, embrace their individuality, and develop the tools to navigate challenges both in and out of school.
We encourage all school-aged girls to join us in this empowering journey of self-discovery and growth!
Helping youth aged 12-18 develop life skills and prepare for the future. Our youth support workers provide guidance and support to young people, helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence and transition to adulthood. They offer life skills training, educational support, and mentorship to empower youth to achieve their full potential.
