What is Protection?

Onion Lake Family Services has been operating for 30 years, since 1994, and has established itself as a cornerstone in providing care and support to children within the community. The agency maintains a strong organizational structure and is committed to delivering high-quality services prioritizing proactive measures to prevent the need for reactive interventions, emphasizing the utilization of family circles and ensuring care for all children without prejudice. The agency fosters working relationships with external agencies and participates in inter-agency groups to enhance collaboration and support. Additionally, Onion Lake Family Services continues to provide funding through community partnerships, furthering its mission of safeguarding the well-being of children and families within the community and preventing children from entering care.

Despite facing challenges such as fears of children being removed from their families and concerns about the focus being more on problems than support, there is a strong commitment to improving support systems within the community, by allow community to take back the agency and call it its own.  Additionally, steps are being taken to establish First Nations standards, regulations, and laws to better serve the Despite challenges with transitioning children back to their families and capacity limitations at the community level, efforts are being made to improve support services and access external resources more effectively. Overall, there is a collective dedication to overcoming obstacles and strengthening support networks to ensure the well-being of children and families within the community.

Intake - 1st Point of Contact:

Our intake team is the first point of contact for families seeking assistance. They provide a supportive and responsive process, ensuring that each family’s unique needs are understood and addressed promptly. The intake process involves initial assessments to identify immediate needs and determine the best course of action for support and protection.

Investigation:

Our trained professionals conduct thorough investigations to ensure the safety of children. These investigations are comprehensive, involving detailed assessments and coordination with relevant authorities and community resources. Our goal is to provide a thorough understanding of each situation, enabling us to take appropriate actions to protect children.

Family Service Workers:

Providing ongoing support and resources to families in need. Our family service workers are dedicated professionals who work closely with families to provide individualized support. They assist with a variety of needs, including parenting advice, access to community resources, and ongoing monitoring to ensure the well-being of children and families.

Foster Care:

Offering safe and nurturing environments for children through our foster care program. We recruit, train, and support foster families who provide temporary care for children in need. Our foster care program ensures that children have a stable and loving environment while we work towards reunification with their families or find permanent homes.

Monthly Programs:

Engaging families with monthly programs designed to support and strengthen family bonds. Each month, OLFS hosts a program focused on different aspects of family life, such as parenting workshops, recreational activities, and educational sessions. These programs are designed to build stronger family connections and provide valuable skills and resources to families.
